THE TRUE MEASUREMENT TUSKER TALLY
and
WILD BOAR REGISTRY
A scoring system based on measurement is the solution to a problem that Terry Palmer and I (Troy Ayer) have been challenging each other to solve for the past two years or more. The problem was shared by the hog hunting industry as a whole. The hog hunting world did not have an acceptable standardized system to measure boar hogs awarding points for trophy characteristics. Hog hunting is not only gaining in popularity, it’s receiving more creditability, from the entire hunting industry, as a big game sport. A big game sport it truly is, we all share a passion for perusing boar of trophy status.
We believe the “trophy status” of any big game animal is truly defined by the shooter. Many of my most gratifying kills were average size animals, harvested against above average odds. Variables that effect the way a hunter views the harvest are personal and as unique as each hunt. This is the way it should be and were not out to change it. A scoring system that rates trophy status is limited in having to rely on physical characteristics alone, but without a universal system of measurement, the trophy characteristics of a boar can only be described and imagened. With a universal system of measurement the trophy qualities of a boar can be passed from hunter to hunter in casual conversation forever.
Ask a whitetail hunter “how’d ya’ do” when he returns from a week in Alberta. You’re likely to hear “we got two in the 130’s and a 150”, you then know what size deer he harvested. When elk hunters talk of 300 class bulls, they know what size animal their discussing. Hog hunters don’t share this luxury. A registry to record trophy boar, the hunters that harvest them and the geographical areas that produce them has also been a long time coming. A scoring system is needed. The True Measurement Tusker Tally is what we have been looking for. We believe this system gives equal credit to all of the characteristics that are most commonly viewed as giving a boar trophy status. Utilizing a method of measurement to award points makes the Tusker Tally user friendly.
The last and final inspection of the Tusker Tally is right here right now. We are asking you to take a good long look at the new scoring system. Work it around your internal data base and tell us what you think. Give it a dry run and test score a hog or two. We will be reviewing feedback until May the 20th, at that time we’ll finalize what is left undone and be operational June 1st 2007.
