Tusker Tally Scoring Tutorial
Not official rules. Use this as a tutorial to score with the official rules.
Body Score + Tusker Score + Head Score = Total Score
Make certain that there are three witnesses (other than the shooter & scorer) to observe/assist in the scoring and to sign the score card. The shooter must arrange for the three witnesses to be present. The shooter is also responsible for the registration fee and the postage cost. The scorer will provide use of a digital camera, and an official T.T. Scoring Kit. Familiarize yourself with the Official Tusker Tally Rules beforehand, and make certain the boar meets the criteria of the official T.T. rules as a scorable boar.
There are three sub-scores, each awarding credit to a physical characteristic that contributes to the trophy status of a wild boar. Each sub-score has a set minimum that must be met for a boar to be registered. This ensures a wild boar must display trophy characteristics in all areas to be awarded a place in the registry. The sum of the three sub-scores is the total score.
Each sub-score must be supported by a photo taken in a fashion so it resembles the sample photo. The photo’s must be sent via e-mail along with information identifying the score card they support. Score cards must be mailed in the u.s. mail, both score card and photos must be sent in by the scorer within five working days of one another.
Body Score
Measured in feet and inches to the nearest inch.
The body score should be measured first, this being done the scorer can detach the head (leaving the hide intact). Detaching the head provides the scorer easier access when measuring the tusks. Use caution when handling the boar not to damage the tusk.
First lay the hog on a flat surface (concrete or plywood will suffice) lying on one side. Extend the tail straight out parallel with the body. Place the T.T. measuring tape lying flat stretched out straight just above the boars back running from nose to tail. This tape provides your photo with a visual reference to support your score. Standing directly over the hog pointing your camera straight down, take the Body Score photo. Check your photo for quality and make sure it resembles the sample photo.. This photo. must support the score card.
Length measurement:
Using the 90 degree square tool and marker from the scoring kit, mark the concrete at the tip of the boars snout and again at the tip of the tail, hair included. With the boar out of the way measure distance between your marks, convert this using the body score decimal chart then record onto the score card in the appropriate space.
Girth measurement: You can take the girth measurement with the boar on the floor but it is easier taken while the hog is hanging. Use the T.T. measuring tape and measure around the boars chest following a path in a straight line from the chest plate to the back as close to the front leg pits (arm pits) as possible. The tape should be pulled as tight as possible when scoring. Convert this using the decimal chart then record onto the score card in the appropriate space. .
The length and girth measurement’s are recorded separately and then added together to determine the total body score.
TUSKER SCORE
Measured in inches to the nearest 1/8 of an inch
The combined score of each tusk (bottom cutters) is the total tusker score. The circumference and length of each tusk are combined to determine the score for that tusk. Each tusk is measured individually, each measurement is recorded separately. Each measurement is then totaled to determine the tusker score.
The left tusk is “the boars left“. The right tusk is “the boars right“.
Only bottom cutters are measured. If a tusk is broken, only the portion intact with the gum is to be measured.
Using the T.T. measuring tape, measure the circumference of the tusk nearest the gum line. Convert this with the decimal chart then record onto score card in appropriate space.
Measure the length of the tusk from the gum to the tip following the most forward ridge on the tusk or the outside of the curve. Convert this with the decimal chart then record onto score card in the appropriate space.
A detailed photo taken straight into the boars mouth with the T.T. tape stretched out tight behind the tusk must support the score card. Make certain the photo is clear and is taken like the sample tusk photo.
HEAD SCORE
Measured in inches to the nearest 1/8 of an inch.
The head score is the length of the snout from the most forward point of the eye socket to the tip of the nose. Stretch the measuring tape from the top of the nose dead center, to the most forward edge of the eye socket (the point where the eye meets bone). Convert this with the decimal chart then record it onto the score card in the appropriate space.
A photo of the head must support the score card. Take a photo of the boars face with the T.T. measure tape stretched from eye to nose.
The Tusker Tally is designed to be user friendly, enabling anyone that orders a scoring kit to score a boar. To maintain the credibility of the listings in the Wild Boar Registry the Tusker Tally requires each score card be signed by three witnesses who observed the scoring. Each witness must provide valid contact information. The score card must also be supported by a photo backing up each sub-score. Make certain the required photos are clear and taken in good light bearing a likeness to the sample photo. The witnesses and photos give your score credibility and must be provided. .
